Reliable Floor Vibration Testing for Modern Timber Buildings

About

Need a dependable way to measure?

Survin is a portable vibration excitation and measurement system designed for modern timber and CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) buildings.

As CLT construction becomes more common in apartment buildings and multi-story structures, designers and engineers face a growing challenge: accurately evaluating how vibration and impact noise travel through wooden floor structures.

Traditional testing methods such as heel-drop tests and walking tests are difficult to repeat consistently and often depend heavily on the individual performing the test. Existing standards and simulation tools were originally developed for concrete and traditional materials, making them less reliable for modern timber structures.

Survin provides a repeatable, measurable, and standards-oriented solution for floor vibration testing. No more heel-drop tests!

Function

Modern CLT floor structures behave differently from traditional concrete floors. Existing acoustic and vibration design tools were built for concrete and other traditional materials, not CLT.

Designers need reliable ways to measure:

  • Impact vibration
  • Floor resonance
  • Damping behavior
  • Structural response to walking and footsteps
  • Noise transmission between apartments

Current methods have several limitations:

  • Heel-drop tests depend on the weight and movement of the person
  • Walking tests are cumbersome and difficult to standardize
  • Results can vary between operators
  • Repeatability is poor
  • Current tools are not optimized for CLT

Survin replaces inconsistent manual testing with a portable excitation and measurement platform.

How it works:

The entire system is packaged inside a rugged wheeled toolbox, making it easy to transport directly to construction sites and testing environments!

  1. The operator connects the system to a laptop.
  2. Test waveforms are generated digitally:
    • Heel-drop simulations
    • Sine waves
    • Frequency sweeps
    • Custom excitation signals
  3. The signal is sent via USB to the control electronics.
  4. The electronics convert the signal from digital to analog.
  5. The amplifier drives the shaker, which excites the floor structure.
  6. The accelerometer measures the floor response.
  7. Software analyzes resonance frequencies, vibration response, damping behavior, and structural characteristics.

The system consists of:

  • Portable wheeled toolbox
  • Control electronics
  • Amplifier
  • Shaker / vibration exciter
  • Accelerometer measurement system
  • Laptop software interface
